P&H: Rejects State’s Appeal After 817-Day Delay, Citing Unexplained Inaction

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed the Punjab Government’s appeal against a motor accident compensation award after refusing to condone an 817-day delay in filing it. Justice Harsh Bunger held that the State had not provided a sufficient explanation for the delay.

The appeal challenged a January 2024 award by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Ferozepur, granting compensation to the claimants following the death of Ajay Singh in a road accident. The State sought permission to file its appeal late, saying the award had moved through departmental offices for approval and that the delay resulted from administrative procedures.
