P&H: Acquits Electricity Department Foreman in Bribery Case, Says Recovery Alone Cannot Prove Corruption

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted a Foreman of the Electricity Department who had been convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a consumer accused of electricity theft.

Justice Subhas Mehla allowed the appeal filed by Pritam Singh and set aside the conviction and sentence awarded by the Special Judge, Kurukshetra. The court said the prosecution had failed to prove the most important ingredients of the offence, namely demand and voluntary acceptance of illegal gratification.
